2015: The Year that Eircode Began

Posted by Kaity Klonowski | Jul 10, 2020

The year it all started!

Did you know that before 2015, Ireland was one of the few developed countries that didn't have a defined postal system? It’s true!

Over 35% of properties in Ireland share their address with at least one other property. That's 800,000 non-unique addresses in Ireland, meaning that they have no house name or number.

Eircode was specifically designed to overcome Ireland’s unique addressing problem. Unlike other countries where postcodes define a cluster or group of addresses, in Ireland a unique Eircode is assigned to each residential and business address. This removes the guesswork from finding addresses and makes it easier than ever to send and receive post and deliveries!

For us, Eircode was one of the stories that defined 2015.  Since its launch it is now so widely used in Ireland it’s hard to recall what life was like before it.  Let’s take a look back at 2015 and all the other things happening that year.
